This workshop will survey a selection of traditional folk art embroidery styles and stitches from the villages of several countries within the Carpathian Basin in Eastern Europe, working a sampler that you will then be able to complete at home.
We will explore embroidery motifs from several different embroidery styles from countries including Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia, and Hungary - worked in wool thread on linen background fabric. We will explore different stitching techniques and discuss the history of the embroidery as well as how the embroidered textiles were historically used. We will talk about different methods to transfer the embroidery designs to fabric, embroidery techniques that produce a clean back for your work (if you wish to have one!), and how to care for your finished piece.
