Coil Basketry
Weaving a Way of Life

Thursday October 15th , 2009

9:00 am - 4:30pm
Class Fee - Includes Materials
    One Day Class - $135

Class Size - 10 Students

In an environment that encourages play and exploration, come learn the ancient basket weaving technique of coiling to craft 21st century vessel forms.

Carbon dated to 9,000 B.C., basketry is one of the oldest crafts of primitive man. Coiled basketry, found predominately in Africa and the Americas, predates pottery.   Coiling is also thought by some to be the most sophisticated of the basket weaving techniques and the most adaptable to contemporary fibers. Using wool, bamboo fiber, cotton, and poly blends, you will transform this ancient craft into present day sculptural containers. You will also have available a cornucopia of materials such as beads, feathers, shells, stones and not-so-conventional industrial, manmade and natural materials to use for embellishment.

In this workshop you will be taught the various stitches used in coiling; learn to attach beads and other adornments within the structure, use multiple yarns simultaneously, be shown ways to move from conventional basket to sculptural form, and be shown various way in which to complete your pieces.

You will also experience coiling as a meditative practice as we use it as a means to move out of your head and into your body, attune to your natural internal rhythm, and reconnect with your innate ability to create. More than a technique I share what has become a way of life and my path of joy.

Expect to create 2 coil sculptural vessels while discovering how wonderfully adaptable this method of basket weaving can be.

Participants wishing to take both days can polish their newly acquired skills, create additional pieces that stretch basketry in sculpture and explore ways in which to further embellish their pieces

All materials are included, although an OPTIONAL materials sheet will be provided at the time of registration
