Introduction to Fair Isle Knitting
Thursday October 13, 2011
9:00 am – 4:30 pm
Class Fee – $ 150.00
Class Size - 15 Students
This workshop if for the knitter who wants to learn the techniques needed to knit a traditional Fair Isle sweater. We will knit a sampler using traditional Shetland yarn. We will cover construction techniques, “corrugated” ribbing, color choices, stitch patterns, steeks and finishing techniques. Participant will leave with the skills and confidence to knit a full size sweater.
Class Length: 6 hour
Proficiency Level: Open to all, but experience with circular needles is helpful.
Materials List: Please bring 16” circular needle US size 2 & 3, stitch markers, scissors. Yarn will be provided.

Tvåändsstickning (Twined Knitting)

Class Size - 15 Students
This Scandinavian knitting technique uses 2 strands of yarn to produce a distinctive double fabric. Learn how to work the various stitches as you knit a pair of patterned wrist-warmers. Chart reading, 2 color cast on and braid will be covered. 
Class Length: 3 hour
Proficiency Level: Beginner/Intermediate but experience with double-pointed needles is helpful.
Materials List: Please bring a set of double-point needle US size 3, stitch marker, scissors. (Yarn will be provided.)

Introduction to Sweater Design
Friday October 14, 2011

Class Fee – $ 50.00
Class Size - 20 Students
Discover your inner designer! In this workshop we will go step by step through the design process. Taking a common sense approach, we will talk about gauge, yarns, silhouettes, sizes, pattern stitches. Donna will show you how to create a schematic and how to bring it to life. Learn how to knit a sweater that FITS! We will also cover altering and resizing existing patterns. Students will begin an “idea notebook”.
Class Length: 3 hour
Proficiency Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Materials List: Please bring a measuring tape, a couple of small balls of yarns you would like to work with (with appropriate needles), any pictures and images that inspire you as well as a calculator, notebook, pen and pencil. Feel free to bring any sweaters you may have with “fit” issues.

Preparing Fleece by Hand
Saturday October 15, 2011

Class Fee – $ 30.00
Class Size - 15 Students
This class is for anyone who would like to learn simple, inexpensive methods of preparing washed fleece for spinning. Try your hand at flick carding, hand carding and combing (using inexpensive dog combs). Learn which method is best for each type of fleeces. Fleece from different breeds will be prepared.
Class Length:  1.5 hours – students will spin their samples
Proficiency Level: Open to all who love working with wool!  
Materials: Bring any tools that you own (make sure to label them with your name), pen for notes, index cards. (6 hour: wheel in good working order, niddy noddy, extra bobbins, lazy kate,paper hang tags)

Measuring Your Handspun Yarn
Saturday October 15, 2011
10:30am – 12:00 noon
Class Fee – $ 30.00
Class Size - 15 Students
This workshop is geared toward the spinner who would like to be able to accurately measure their handspun. Evaluating what you are spinning will enable you to spin consistent and repeatable yarn. Donna will teach quick and easy methods for determining and recording your yarn information including: wraps per inch (WPI), twists per inch (TPI), angle (or degree) of twist, weight and yardage of your single and plied yarns. We will also discuss when and why each measurement is useful to you as a spinner.
Class Length: 1.5 hours
Proficiency Level: Open to all who can use a wheel or spindle.
Materials: Please bring a wheel that is in good working order (or a couple spindles in different weights), a niddy noddy, 3 bobbins and lazy kate, paper hang tags, pen or pencil. Fiber will be provided.

Beginning Handspindle - Saturday Afternoon

Come join us and learn the basics of spinning on a drop spindle. We will cover drafting, spinning, plying and finishing your yarns. If you do not have a spindle, one will be provided. No experience necessary! Spinning fibers will be provided.

Biography of Donna Kay:
For over 25 years Donna Kay has been a professional knitting teacher and designer. She has a passion for traditional knitting and spinning and enjoys sharing her expertise with others. As well as teaching nationally and locally she designs for yarn companies and various publications, including Knitter’s Stash. In order to further promote traditional knitting she started her own design company, Tree of Life Designs. Donna lives on a farm in NH with her husband and family where they keep oxen, sheep and horses.

 I have been teaching knitting since 1983 and spinning since 2000. Though not complete, this is a sampling of some of my teaching.
