Spinning for a Project
Thursday, October 14, 2010 AND Friday, October 15, 2010
This is a 2-Day Class
9:00am - 4:30pm
Class Fee: $150.00
Class Size: 15

This workshop will cover many facets of yarn design so that you can walk away confident that the yarn you spin will be what you envisioned for your projects. The workshop is a 2 day workshop. The first day we will cover wheel mechanics and how to get the most out of your wheel. You will also learn learn how to spin different thicknesses of yarn, spinning consistent and balanced yarns, the difference between “worsted” and “woolen”, and my personal favorite, how to get the colors you want, especially out of those beautiful hand dyed rovings. The second day will cover how to apply that basic spinning knowledge towards a project, how to modify a project for handspun yarns, and how to spin a yarn for a commercial project. This class is geared primarily towards spinners that knit, however, if you prefer to crochet, weave, or create some other type of project with your yarns feel free to discuss this with the instructor so that you can apply what you learned during the workshop towards other end uses for your yarns.

Time: This workshop is a 2 day workshop, 6 hours each + 1 hour for lunch (7 total).

Level: Student should be able to spin a continuous yarn and ply on their wheel.

Homework: acquire at least 1 pattern that you would like to spin yarn for

Instructor will provide: Handouts & practice wool

Materials for students to bring: A working wheel, spinning wheel oil, hand cards, a tensioned lazy kate, minimum 3 bobbins, knitting/crochet/weaving patterns that they would like to use their handspun yarns in. 4 ounces of space dyed roving (hand painted in sections will work best) that you ideally would like to spin for the pattern you selected. 2-4 ounces of fiber from your stash to practice spinning techniques, and a strand of commercial yarn that you like the look of and would like to copy in your handspun.
