Why they decided on sheep?
When Mr. McCord was a child he had dairy cows and Mrs. McCord had horses. When their daughter Carol started 4-H in 1980 they got sheep.  They started out with 3 commercial ewes and 1 Suffolk from Idaho.

What breed of sheep do you have now?
The McCords now have 15 Dorsets, 15 Southdowns and 14 commercial sheep.

Why did you decide on this breed of sheep?
The McCords liked the Dorsets because of their out of season breeding and the Southdowns for their small size for the grandchildren.

How many acres do you have?
The McCords have 5 acres.

What associations are you a member of?
The McCords are a member of the Dutchess County Sheep and Wool Growers Association and Columbia County Extension.  Mr. and Mrs. McCord are also the leaders of the Golden Fleece 4-H Sheep Club in Dutchess County.

Do you produce any farm products?
The McCords sell Easter lambs, freezer lambs, breeding stock, and wool. Mr. McCord also is a shearer.

Some important tips for new shepherds?
Make sure you ask questions; there are no stupid questions.

How do you market your animals?
They sell and promote their animals privately and by the word of mouth.
