Cutting Without Fear: Basic Norwegian Construction Techniques - Thursday

Class Size: 15 Students
Description: This class will cover the special techniques for creating and finishing traditional Norwegian garments. Included will be machine stitching and cutting armholes and cardigan fronts, attaching sleeves and plackets and hem finishes, differences between Norwegian and Fair Isle designs, as well as some of the finer points of reading Norwegian knitting charts.
Materials List:
Homework Assignment, blunt tapestry needle, appropriate size circular, straight or double pointed needles to complete plackets and neckband, crochet hook 1 size smaller than knitting needles, scissors, remnants of yarn for plackets and neckband, and pins.
Homework Assignment: Body and sleeve tubes are for a sampler (will fit an 18" doll, such as an American Girl doll, when complete), see instructions below. Gauge is 24 sts x 30 rnds = 4"(10cm) x 4"(10cm) using US size 3 (3.25mm) or 4 (3.5mm) needles. Full homework instructions available when workshop is selected.

Description: This class will focus on reading lace charts and understanding a wide variety of symbols, including how and why the "no stitch" symbol is used. Students will learn how to chart basic lace stitch patterns and knit swatches from sample charts.
Materials List:
Sport or worsted weight yarn for several small swatches, appropriate size straight or circular needles for yarn, double pointed needles (optional), graph paper, pencil and eraser, and ruler.

Description: This class will focus on reading cable and twist stitch charts, and understanding a variety of the symbols used. Students will learn how to chart basic cable patterns and knit swatches from sample charts.

Sport or worsted weight yarn for several small swatches, appropriate size straight or circular needles for the yarn, cable needle, graph paper, pencil and eraser, and ruler.

Chart Literacy: Stranded Knitting - Saturday

Class Size: 18 Students
Description: This class will focus on reading and understanding charts used for Fair Isle and Scandinavian knitting patterns. Gain an understanding of how these traditions differ from each other, and learn how to handle two or more colors in work at the same time. Practice the new skills by beginning an adult size hat or headband.
Materials List:
Homework Assignment; sport or worsted weight yarn in 2 – 4 colors;
Needles: For sport weight yarn, size 2 (2.75mm) and size 3 (3.25mm) or 4 (3.5mm) 16" long circular needles (gauge for stockinette should be 6 sts per 1"/ 2.5cm).
For worsted weight yarn, size 6 (4mm) and size 7 (4.5mm) or 8 (5mm) 16" long circular needles (gauge for stockinette should be 4 ½ stitches per 1"/2.5cm);
Stitch markers, colored pencils in colors similar to yarn colors, ruler or other marker to aid in reading chart.
Homework Assignment: With smaller needle and sport weight yarn, cast on 120 sts; or with worsted weight yarn, cast on 92 sts. Join to work in the round and place marker for beginning of rounds. For a simple faced hem, work about 1 ½" of stockinette stitch; for a turned ribbed hem, work about 3" of k1, p1 or k2, p2 rib.

Biography:
Therese Chynoweth is a knitwear designer, technical editor and knitting teacher. Almost entirely self-taught in advanced knitting techniques, her interest in art, textiles, and ethnic design, as well as her degree in graphic design have all influenced her personal knitting over the years. She is especially fond of incorporating aspects of sewing, crochet and a variety of ethnic knitting techniques into her pieces. Therese's designs have appeared in publications such as Interweave Knits, Knitter's, Vogue Knitting, Knit Simple, Cast On, and books such as Simple Style. Her first book, Norwegian Sweater Techniques for Today's Knitter (Wiley, 2010), is on Norwegian finishing techniques. Therese has recently joined the staff of Creative Knitting as Technical Editor, and is also a member of the Association of Knitwear Designers (AKD).
