Felt ‘n Stitch Pillow Top

Create a luxurious pillow top, or use it for something else, by felting silk hankies (mawata silk) into soft merino wool. The finished piece will fit a standard 14”x14” pillow. The workshop will also include an introduction to some basic crazy quilt stitches using handspun silk, wool and lace-weight yarns. No previous felting or stitching experience is required. Participants should bring scissors and a bath towel. Class fee includes all materials.

Dye‘n to Felt (1 day)

Dye pre-felted wool using acid dyes and a microwave. The pre-felted fabric is made from extra-fine Merino wool and is a innovative product. After dyeing, the pre-felted wool will be wet-felted to create a piece of fabric large enough to make two placemats, a table runner or other end uses. Matching yarn can be dyed as well for later stitching or embellishment. No previous felting experience is required. Participants should bring scissors and a bath towel, and wear shoes and clothing which may get wet or dyed. Disposable gloves will be provided. Class fee includes all materials.

Felted Scarf Using Pre-felted Wool (1/2 day)

Class Size - 10 Students
Create a fashion scarf using only pre-felted extra-fine merino wool and the wet felting process. No pulling and laying out tufts of wool, just snip and felt – it’s as easy as that. No previous felting experience is required. Participants should bring scissors and a bath towel. Class fee includes all materials.

Needle Felted Sheep Ornament (1/2 day)

Create a whimsical lamb ornament, approximately 4” tall, using wool from the festival’s featured breed, the American Oxford. While the focus of this workshop is on the Oxford lamb, this fun felting technique can be used to create other types of ornaments, and examples will be provided. No previous felting experience is required. Class fee includes all materials.

Felted Soaps (1/2 day)

Wet felt around three handcrafted organic goat milk/olive oil soaps to create unique gifts. Participants will first wrap a blend of llama, alpaca and Oxford sheep wool around a bar of soap then needle felt a design using wool locks and wool pencil roving. Soaps scented with essential and fragrance oils will be available. Each participant should bring a bath towel. No previous felting experience is required. Class fee includes all materials.

Nan Crawford is a Virginia native and a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Natural materials inspire her creativity and she feels best when combining nature’s raw elements.
Since entering the world of felting, Nan’s unique felted pieces have won awards during the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival, Southeastern Animal Fiber Festival and Fall Fiber Festival of Virginia. She teaches felting workshops for children and adults.
Nan lives in Unionville, Virginia, with husband Steve, llamas, guineafowl and canine friend Jax.
