Weaving Techniques As Applied To Knits

Thursday October 14, 2010

9:00am-4:30pm

Cost: $ 125
Class Size: 25

Proficiency Level:  Intermediate, can execute two-handed, stranded, Fair-Isle type color knitting.
Description: By combining another yarn to your knitting via methods borrowed from weaving, many aesthetic possibilities become apparent, certain problems may be solved, and a new technique is added to your oeuvre.  Textures are easily obtainable, colors may be taken more advantage of, and patterning is more accessible.  Novelty yarns are handled better, less yarn might be used, gorgeous but uncomfortable fibers need not touch your skin, and stretching can be minimized.  Learn:  * The the "up/down" method of applying a separate yarn onto knits, * The "in/out" method of applying a separate yarn onto knits, * The slip stitch method of the same yarn as a "weft" thread, * Vertical weaves, color weaves, smocking weaves, and much more.
The applications of these techniques include:  * What kinds of yarns are best suited for these fabrics, * What kinds of garments are best suited for these fabrics, * How to chart these weaves so you'll know what you'll be getting beforehand.
By the end of this workshop, you will have a sampler of knitted "woven" fabrics plus enough ideas to keep you in stitches for a very long, long time.

More Reversible Cables

Friday October 15, 2010

9:00am-4:30pm

Cost: $ 125

Class Size: 25

Proficiency Level:  Advanced, must be familiar with my regular Reversible Cables already.
Description:  Learn Lily’s latest methods of creating cables on both sides of a fabric.  These include fully moving and expanding cables across whole surfaces (i.e. not just the same old vertical rope cables).  These are similar to “traveling stitches” and each side need not be the same!  Then become familiar with a unique, 2-colored, vertically pinstriped reversible cable effect.  You must experience them to believe them.

Shaping Up With Short Rows

Saturday October 16, 2010

9:00am-12 noon

Cost: $ 75

Class size - 25 Students

Proficiency Level:  Intermediate, anyone who's comfortable with the "stepped" decreases of a shoulder slope or neckline.
Description: Short Rows are smooth solutions to slants and curves.  Instead of the "stepped" bind offs at shoulders and necks, short rows (sometimes referred to as partialknitting) create a continuous line.  This makes seaming and picking up stitches much easier.  The tremendous capabilites for invisibly sculpting knits within the fabric will also be explored.  Learn a horizontal bust dart, a side-to-side yoke, a seamless hat on 2 needles instead of 4, entrelacs, a sock heel......  Other possibilities include unusualtextures and no-bobbin intarsias.

Computer Aided Design

Saturday October 16, 2010

1:00pm-4:30pm

Cost: $ 75

Class Size: 25

  Proficiency Level:  Open to all
Description:  Even if you are computer-illiterate, you may want to know what all the fuss is about and what the possibilites are that computers offer.  Computers have been given a lot of attention lately.  Deemed the key to the future, see how designers and fiberartists can use electronic media as a very useful tool to aid the creative process.
See a demonstration at work.  Get a broad overview of realistic achievements and what you can expect to get out of the computer.  Even discuss the pro’s and con’s of different systems (IBM-compatibles vs. Mac’s).  Sample some of the various software available.
“CAD” has been a new and exciting way for me to “visualize” my work beforehand.  It has allowed me to experiment a whole lot more without a whole lot of extra investment in materials and time.  Covered also will be down-to-earth information on price, peripherals, on-line help services, and the dreaded “learning curve.”
