Crocheted motifs are fun, portable and quick to stitch, but granny squares are so passe. Using basic crochet stitches, we'll explore less common shapes and techniques while making a variety of contemporary designs. See how three-dimensional stitches, unusual colorways and yarns can combine to create eye-catching designs, and learn techniques to improve the look of your motif.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skills Needed: sc, hdc, dc, ability to read a pattern
Students must bring: smooth worsted-weight or sport-weight yarn in several coordinating colors, crochet hook in a size appropriate for the yarn you bring, scissors

Making Connections

Class Size:  31 students

No, this isn't about social media. It's about joining your crocheted motifs to each other to create beautiful afghans, shawls, and other garments. Make the joining and finishing as much fun as the stitching! You'll learn several tidy ways to join-as-you-go and join-after-stitching. No sewing required!
Open to all skill levels
Skills Needed:
ch, sc, hdc, dc
Homework: Using smooth, light-colored yarn worsted weight yarn, stitch at least 4 motifs of EACH of the following shapes: square, hexagon, circle. You may use any motif design of your choice, but each motif should be no smaller than 3". Do not weave in final ends. Patterns for each of these shapes may be found at www.edieeckman.com.
Students must bring: homework motifs and yarn and hook used for homework, hooks 1 size smaller and 1 size larger than used for homework, scissors, blunt-tip tapestry needle
