Popularized in the mid 19th century, Penny Rugs are small wool throws or mats with simple shapes appliqued on the surface. They were use-it-up projects much like the quilts or hooked rugs of the period and often decorated a desk, table top or hearth.
Using felted wool or wool felt and a few simple stitches, you can create wonderful garments or accents for your home. And stitching on wool is a dream - it is so soft and the colors become even more luscious when the fabric is felted!
The workshop covers all the basics from transferring the design to stitching and finishing options. While the technique is essentially the same as our ancestors used, we will make the work easier with some simple tools and tricks. And I will bring lots of finished Penny Rug clothing and accessories to inspire you!
