TRADITIONAL SHETLAND SCARF

Proficiency level: Intermediate
Using traditional Shetland techniques and patterns, this light-as-a-feather scarf can be made in as many colors as you wish. Using lace weight yarn on #5 or #6 needles, it incorporates a lacy edge, faggoting, the traditional Shetland pattern of cockleshell, and a beautiful scalloped border.

Homework:  Two swatches of garter stitch, about 3 inches wide by 2 inches long done in any weight yarn, and left on stitch holders. Do not bind off! Also bring about 1 yard of contrasting yarn with a tapestry needle. We will use these materials to practice grafting.

Supplies: See above homework, plus American size 5 or 6 single pointed needles, (or circular, but we will work back and forth) stitch markers. Class fee includes the cost of a kit of real Shetland lace weight yarn. Enough yarn for samples and full sized scarf.

Some things in knitting can seem like a drudgery, but if you know some basic techniques and tips, it's a breeze. Learn a slick trick every few minutes and you will be well on your way to making your knitting more enjoyable and professional looking. There's something for everyone, including knitting backwards, cabling without a needle, working short rows, a few cool cast-ons, and 20 others.

The following 25 techniques will be learned: knitting backwards, purling backwards, fixing a dropped stitch, 1 row buttonhole, spacing buttonholes evenly, increasing, decreasing, working short rows, cabling without a needle, binding off over cables, 2 needle bindoff, cutting your work, working twists, 2 color cast-on and bind-off, Latvian braids, knitting in ends, invisible cast-on crochet chain method, invisible cast-on for K1, P1 ribbing, grafting a knit stitch, crochet hook cast-on, chained edging, mattress stitch, I-Cord, and making twisted cords.

Supplies to bring to class: 4 swatches (from homework), yarn and appropriately sized needles, cable needle, yarn needle, crochet hook

Homework: Knit 4 swatches in stockinette stitch at least 4 inches by 4 inches, 2 of them should be bound off, the other 2 left on stitch holders.

LITTLE BEADED BAG

Proficiency level: Intermediate
Bead knitting is fun and easy and yields spectacular results. Make an adorable little bag while learning the techniques, then branch out and chart your own designs.
What will be covered in class: invisible cast on, chart reading, graphing in garter stitch, stringing beads, twisted cord making, how to thread the cord to make a drawstring.

Supplies to bring to class: about 2 ozs of fingering weight yarn, #1 or #2 needles, about 2 yds of smooth yarn, crochet hook to match needle size, tapestry needle, a small terry washcloth.
Examples of fingering weight yarn: Koigu, sock yarn, Shelridge Farm Ultra. If you are undecided if it is the appropriate weight, then bring several different types to try.

Homework: Knit two garter stitch swatches in any weight yarn about 4" in width and about 2" in height. Leave on holders with about 12" of yarn tail.

Knit a purely relaxing, beautifully fitting shawl without any hassle of reading patterns or charts. Use any weight yarn, any size needles, make it any size. Worked from the top down, this shawl incorporates easy shaping that makes it stay on your shoulders. You can finish it off in any number of different ways….bind off, easy crochet edge bind off, or knit a ruffly border.

Supplies to bring to class: About 2 ounces of any weight yarn and appropriately sized needles, one crochet the same size as needles, one 16" circular needle same size.

BEAUTIFUL BEADED BORDERS

Learn how to make plain things special by adding a beaded border. Knit either vertically or horizontally, you can use beaded borders on anything from "A" to "Z". Try adding them to mitten cuffs, sweater bottom, necklines, or sleeve edging, socks, hats, scarves, and bags. 

Supplies to bring to class: About 2 ounces of any fingering weight-light sport weight yarn  and appropriately sized needles.

HEELS ON YOUR TOES

Learn Candace's revolutionary and simple new method for heels and toes from her new book Strick-ly Socks. End your sock with wonderful stretchy bind off for K1, P1 rib. Now you can really sing, "Heels and toes baby 1, 2, 3!"

Homework: With light colored wool yarn of any weight, cast on 30 sts and work in K1, P1 ribbing for about 1 inch. Leave sts on needles with the yarn attached.

Supplies to bring to class: Light color wool yarn of any weight and appropriately sized double pointed needles, or 2 circulars, or 40" circular for magic loop, a few yards of smooth cotton yarn, a crochet hook the same size as the needles.

Biography
Candace Eisner Strick

 Learning both music and knitting at the age of three, Candace Eisner Strick has followed these two loves all her life. She was co-director and cello instructor of the Suzuki String Program of Mansfield, CT for 16 years.  She is the author of Sweaters From a New England Village (Down East Books, 1996), a book about Harrisville, NH which features twenty original designs using Harrisville Designs yarn.  Her second book, Sweaters From New England Sheep Farms (Down East Books, 2000) is a series of portraits of eight New England sheep farmers who hand-dye the wool they produce, and includes over 25 original designs using their fiber. Her third knitting book, Beyond Wool (Martingale and Co., Feb. 2004), uses a variety of fibers other than wool. There are chapters about the fibers as well as 25 original designs. Her fourth book, The Quilter's Quick Reference Guide, was released in June, 2004 by Martingale and Co. Her fifth publication, Little Box of Crocheted Bags, was released in March 2006 by Martingale and Co. Her sixth book, Knit One, Stripe Too, was released by Martingale and Co. in October, 2008.  Her designs and writing have appeared in Knitter's Magazine, Interweave Knits, Vogue Knitting, Knit It Magazine, Wild Fiber Magazine, Cast On Magazine, Vogue Knitting books and Interweave Knitting books. Candace designs for yarn companies while she and her husband run their internet based business, www.Strickwear.com, which features her exclusive designs, and her new line of yarn, Merging Colors.   
 Candace teaches workshops internationally at major knitting conventions and guilds. Her other fiber related interests include spinning, weaving, dyeing and quilting. When not doing the above, she is riding her bicycle. She lives in rural Connecticut with her pianist/knitting husband and 2 birds.  She has three grown sons, all of whom know how to knit but refuse to do so.
