Portuguese Style of Knitting - Basics -All day Thursday
LENGTH: 6 HOURS SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER
Thursday October 13, 2011
9:00 am – 4:30 pm
Class Fee – $ 135.00
Class Size - 10 Students
Description: During this workshop knitters will have the opportunity to learn and practice the style of knitting I learned when I was 7 years old growing up in South America. The main characteristic is that the yarn is either wrapped behind the neck or looped the through a pin attached to the shoulder in order to maintain a tension which is constant. This style is very efficient and easier on your hands.
The advantages of knitting this way are:
•It’s faster than either the American or Continental styles;
•It requires less hand movement – great for those suffering from Arthritis or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome;
•It helps maintain constant tension, even for beginners;
•Purl stitch is easier than knit stitch.
Baby Booties Project
Workshop: Designed to last 6 hours, we will cover the basics: the knit stitch, the purl stitch, increases, decreases, Portuguese cast on and bind off. Workshop including the baby booties project for practice that they can complete in the afternoon.
Supplies: Worsted weight yarn in 2 0r 3 colors (no black or navy please), needles size US 6, 7, or
8 for practice (circulars or straights), plus basic knitting supplies.
For Booties: 1 ball if Baby Ull (Dale of Norway) 165 meters or 180 yards for each pair of booties
(or any yarn that will give a gauge of 7 sts/inch and 9 rows/inch). Needles size US #2 or size to

Biography of Andrea Wong:
Andrea learned to knit from her mother when she was 7 years old. Her mother had learned from a Portuguese lady and this is the only style she knew until she came to the USA in 1991. Since then she has been knitting avidly, designing and teaching. For the last 6 years Andrea has taught Americans and Canadians in how to knit with the yarn tensioned around a knitting pin on their shoulder or around their neck among other classes.
She also teaches on regular basis in yarn shops and guilds around the country and is one of the teachers at TNNA convention. Andrea has designed for yarn companies like Fiesta Yarns and Ironstone and she has won a contest for XRX for the book “Kids, Kids, Kids”. She has also published three technical DVDs: “Learn how to Knit Portuguese Style" “All about Socks – Portuguese Style” "Portuguese Style of Knitting II"
